2026 recruitment

Post by MrRugby123 » 30 Nov 2024, 12:51

I know crazy as 2025 hasn’t started yet but the 2026 deadline opens tomorrow for super league clubs to speak to players out of contract in 2025. Who are we targeting?

Depends on IMG.
Like this year we’ll have to hold back to see if we are in SL.
It’s a farce.

I feel that won’t be the case this year, there are teams below us who are in a much worse position. English middles will be the priority I would expect.

I think we are in a much better position this year . The Cat A makes a massive difference . We know that we have another 0.125 points to come for the LED advertising boards (had they arrived on time we would have been above Leigh and Wakey in the IMG gradings this year) . We also have another 0.25 points to come from MJ's second investment in the club .

We will lose a little with the new tweaks that are being brought in according to MJ , but we should still be ok to maintain our Cat A and that should make recruitment much easier , especially with MJ now in charge , meaning that there's no reason why we can't approach players for 2026 at the same time as other clubs this time around .

Who of our own players going into their last year of their contract do we need to get extended so as not to lose them to other clubs?

It's a good question . These are the players remaining whose contract expires in 2025 (according to loverugbyleague)

Luke Hooley, Josh Simm, George Lawler,Joe Westerman, George Griffin, Rowan Milnes, Josh Hudson, Sylvester Namo, Will Tate,

A lot will depend on how players go this season and the new ruling could be a positive in some cases , as players will be wanting to perform well enough to be offered a new contract either at their current club or elsewhere.

Of the ones listed above , Namo, Lawler , Milnes and Tate would be the ones I would be looking to keep . I know Tate may raise a few eyebrows , but he looked much better when he filled in at centre before his injury at the end of the season and we are still short of centres as things stand . He has bulked up and has genuine pace . I think Westy may be a little too old , however if he performs well this season , then would definitely give him another year if he wanted it .

A lot will depend on who we sign ourselves though and what positions we need to fill for 2026 .

With Griffins recent concussion issues I would have thought he is only another one before he as to call it a day.

He's been with us five year and it's all well and good having a great pre season, but, how many great games has he had in said 5 years.

To be fair to him he came to us as an inform back rower and we had to use him as a prop for what ever reason.

so hes not been very good in either position, but Scott Murell has faith in him.

Let Murrell pay the lump of gristles wage if he rates him that high.

not a great idea to say bad things about a player, any coach worth his salt trys to boost a players confidence, we have Griffin on the books for another season like all players who put a Cas shirt on let us get behind them , that is the input of a supporter

We were much better with Griffin in the side last year. He doesn't break any pots but makes reasonable yards and plenty of tackles.

He was excellent for Salford playing in the back row year they got to grand final typical cas we bulked him up and played him in a different role

I think that if we manage to finish mid-table this year it will show how good Mags and Delaney are as a coaches and will make recruitment much easier for 2026
