thanks for posting that more than likely i would have been there, how good was the skill set of these part time players plus no kicking tees to be seen but still kicking some great goals

mate like me you have seen the rugby then and now the rules have been changed time and time again not for me have they improved the game at all

Totally agree with you.
Go back to the old rules everyday of the week. A game when wingers were selected for there pace and finishing, props looked like props, loose forwards were ball players and scrum were contested with hookers actually striking for the ball.
We can only dream.

i hope some of our younger fans watch the video yes there were mistakes but look how fast the players moved the ball this head down and gain five yards is not a patch on the rugby that was played, move the ball like that in test matches we would have at least have a chance of beating AUS AND NZ

Rugby League has gone a long way in 50 years, unfortunately backwards in terms of entertainment. We now have players like Massey who is lauded for hitting the ground quickly and jumping up for a quick play the ball. No criticism of Massey just how the game is now.

Remember being at the World Cup tie v France in 1970 too. If I’ve remembered it right it wasn’t a classic. 6-0. Three penalties.

Thanks for putting that up brought back some memorys to me watching bits of that ...Murphy and Millward at half backs that was a strong combination really

when you looked at the fitness levels on the video you would not think these lads were part time players

Different game back then. Watching it, you notice the lack of space between attack and defence. The dummy runner/runaround moves which dominate back play today was impossible under the 5 yard rule. Far fewer points scored back then.

less room with the 5 yard rule but an hell of a lot less injuries giving the big fellas 10 yards start as caused a good number

I remember him well,my Dad referred to him affectionately as "Old Blower" that old hanky used to waved at whoever was officiating at the time and if the Seargeant Major had the whistle it would be accompanied by the puff of the cheeks that got him his nickname and the odd expletive or two. My first game was 1964 and he was already a fixture then......quite the character and a great memory.

My goodness, takes me back! I can see him now, blowing his cheeks out and waving his hanky. I always thought his name was Georgie Blewitt, but I might be getting confused by the nickname you refer to. He certainly blew.

Did he sell papers or am I getting him mixed up. There used to be a couple of blokes selling papers with him not sure if they were brothers. Think they called them John & Ruben. That Ruben fella was a big bloke with a flat cap on and an old mucky CAS scarfe on.

one of these lads sold papers on the train station we would be going fishing to York his head would pop through and shout papers
