Fair points about other sports with a salary cap having a more even playing field but then they don't have a governing body like RL who for instance last season when there was every chance clubs wouldn't complete all the matches later in the season because of Covid gave Wigan and Saints all there (Easy matches ) in the first five weeks
The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have

And when they ‘re-set’ the shortened fixture list, didn’t just go to teams just playing each other twice, but had some teams playing each other three times and some teams only playing each other once.tigerfeat wrote: ↑11 Dec 2021, 09:19 Fair points about other sports with a salary cap having a more even playing field but then they don't have a governing body like RL who for instance last season when there was every chance clubs wouldn't complete all the matches later in the season because of Covid gave Wigan and Saints all there (Easy matches ) in the first five weeks
Hull KR playing Leigh three times, for example, whilst we only played them once. Their play-off spot was a result of the unfair fixture list the RFL managed to concoct.

I don't subscribe to the idea saints have it hard because they are losing naquima and coote. They've signed real quality in replacement and can afford to have hurrell as the spare man.

Also that our sport is dictated when it can play by the clubs who don't own their own ground is abhorrent. So much so that they should be penalised in any franchise talk but held up as fantastic role models.
The advantage it gives teams going into the playoffs playing their last few matches at home is unfair to say they least.

Not quite sure where The Gaurdian are going with this but to compare NFL with Superleague is like comparing oranges and tinned sausages.
The reason that the Cap, draft and floor system works in the NFL is because they are franchises, the league is a closed shop ., all teams have their own live tv coverage and its a National sport (demand for it is huge).
Bear in mind that franchise owners can just up and move teams whenever they like which is why the Rams, Chargers, Raiders and Jets have had many different names and homes. How many of you would travel 100+ miles to support the Birmingham Tigers.
In fact not so long ago. L.A. had no football team as both the Rams and the Raiders moved away which shows the contempt that the owners held the fans in.
Now comparing NRL and Superleague might have more merit but these are different sides of the coin. Again the NRL is a closed shop with a cap and to many it has a bigger, better, more polished feel than Superleague. Traditionally its only ever really competed against Aussie rules as its always been seen as more popular than Union over there.
However, as football continues to get bigger down under the NRL could find itself squeezed for that all important TV audience and it's this revenue stream that drives the franchise system.
I for one do not want to go back to the franchise system that failed so horribly last time around and would take the game as it is, warts and all, yes the system isn't perfect and the deck is sometimes stacked but I firmly believe that we need to protect the pyramid system and the dreams and hopes that that provides. Broadcasters with one eye to mass markets would prefer the franchise system as long as that meant more customers.
I've said it every few years but the broadcasters would love a 12 team closed shop with say London, Yorks, Lancs, 2 from France, North America, 2 other European teams and the rest from wherever the TV audience would be the biggest.

Good stuff Stokey , but can’t see the World League idea ever being anything but fantasy. Can’t see anyone putting the money in worldwide to create a decent player base. Without strong grass roots in the franchise areas the game would quickly wither on the vine and die.Stoke Bloke wrote: ↑15 Dec 2021, 16:52 Not quite sure where The Gaurdian are going with this but to compare NFL with Superleague is like comparing oranges and tinned sausages.
