Trialist

Castleford Tigers welcome former Harlequins Rugby Union scrum-half Lloyd Wheeldon on a one-month trial.
A serving Lance Corporal in 3 Para, Wheeldon began his trial period with the club at the start of January and has been involved in the start of the 2021 pre-season after being granted a temporary release from active service.

The 24-year-old has featured for the British Army's Senior XV before joining Quins in 2019 and is now looking to pursue opportunities in rugby league.

Wheeldon commented: “This is my eighth year in the army, I played army rugby union First Team, so I’ve always been a union-dominant player. I've played in high-end games like Army vs. Navy and obviously got poached for Harlequins from there.

“I’ve always wanted to try playing rugby league and I got quite friendly with Sean Long when he was down there. I got chatting to him about it and then put the feelers out there through my agent, and then an opportunity came up for a trial with Cas after Daryl (Powell) showed interest.

A WIN /WIN situation for the club.

Powell likes to have a trialist / Work in progress on the go.

Not all of them work out, I'm sure he has a plan.
I remember Peter Small

Good luck to the lad, and being a serviceman I'm sure his head will be screwed on rate.

It'll be interesting to see how he goes but what happens if he's deemed good enough to sign on a full-time contract, can he just leave the army or put his career on hold?

I hate posts like this.

There's a huge difference in agenda's between us and Huddersfield right now, TigersBarmy. They've stagnated the last few years and HAD to make quality signings. We have the nucleus of a very good squad, that just needed a few tweeks, which we have!

For consecutive weeks, we had at least 12 players out at any time. Take that from any team and they are in the exact same boat as we were.

What's your defence for being 2nd before lockdown?

And made some great additions with players coming back from injury, let people moan, he’ll be the first to pop up when they start winning again.

It's to be expected to be fair. Usually 'journalists' predict the table on teams that have gone out and spent a boat load on new players. I think the only guarantee this year, is Saints finish in the top 2. Rest is to play for.

Following on from the uncertainty after Saints, I feel we could finish anywhere from bottom to 3rd. Bit of luck we may even push Saints off top spot but I'd be very pleasantly surprised if we did.
