3 years is a long time in rugby league.....
..... so 3 years ago today
You have 3 reasons to share with what’s gone wrong....
For me
1) Gale; we have never looked the same in attack
2) Hardaker, never found replacement full back
3) Webster, when you look back at the tries he scored, our centres have not had the same threat since
There are obviously many others, but these are my three

Injuries.
Our recruitment hasn't quite been on the money.
We still struggle in the high pressure games.

1) The Hardacker situation
2) When we had just won the league in 2017 making ridiculous championship standard signings ...daft desicions nearly doubling Astons wage to bring him from Leeds a example
3) Players been given too long contracts on too much money ...tho some of them seemed right at the time
If I could add a forth ...Ben Cooper leaving the club

The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have

For me, you can pin point everything that has happened in the last 3 year to one incident and it was Zak getting stood down in the week leading up to the Grand Final.
Mentally we was beat before we even stepped out at Old Trafford and we never seemed to recover from it.
It has taken us until the start of 2021 to finally bag a quality full back in Evalds. A full 3 seasons after losing the best FB in the league at the time.
Since 2017 we have tried off the top of my head (in no particular order);
Ben Roberts, Jake Trueman, Callum Turner, Pete Mata'tiua, Quentin Laulu-Togaga'e, James Clare, Greg Eden, Jordan Rankin, Michael Shenton and Hodgson Bailey would have had a crack had he not been injured.
Although signing Wattsy was probably the hidden gem in all of the doom and gloom. I hope DP protects him for the rest of the year ready for next season.

1. Poor retention.
2. Poor recruitment.
3. Poor conditioning and treatment of injuries.

Re: 3 years is a long time in rugby league.....
Interesting points:
1: Disruption - I would put Gale and Hardaker in that category. I resent that statement because it kind of suggests that 2 individuals were responsible for our glory and that was far from the case. I think the cause was the disruption, but the manifestation was in item 2.
2: The mental aspect I completely agree on both the coup-de-gras occasions we made it to - CC Final and GF, I don't and didn't at the time believe we walked out believing we could win. It is not as simple as us believing we can win, but it is a critical part of the preparation.
3: Squad balance - I think leading to the LLS in 2017, we were setting standards on how we set up to play and others were following. Was that because of the pegs and holes we had? Or because of the recruitment, or lucky alignment of both? Hindsight is always 2020, but it worked. Since then, be that recruitment, retention, condition, injury or what, it has never looked right and balanced in a few positions.

No recognised specialist full back for too long.
Don't think Wells has bettered Gill. (I like Wells but don't think he has done a better job than Gill). The 'underwhelming' signings under Gill always seemed to turn into better players and push us on, the 'overseas' signings under Wells haven't pushed us on at all. I would say Blair and Feki have been disasters. We need to stick with what we and DP are good at - turning average players into good/very good players.

surley the people at the top are to blame. i don't know anyone who did'nt predict what would happen after 2017 it's cas and we never build on success. it's almost like they are scared to be a top club.

Hitchcox on the wing. Massively underrated but never let us down. Those tries in perpignan absolutely fantastic and although size wasn't on his side he certainly made up for in every other aspect of his game. To top it off, he loved it downt lane

Not scared of being a top club. Not got what it takes to be a top club. We are and have been run by incompetents and self interest idiots and that is the main reason we are where we are and our history shows and repeats these behaviours.greenhouse wrote: ↑Wed Oct 07, 2020 1:36 pmsurley the people at the top are to blame. i don't know anyone who did'nt predict what would happen after 2017 it's cas and we never build on success. it's almost like they are scared to be a top club.
The current custodian/S are pretty much as bad as we have ever had. Monkey and organ grinder come to mind.
Money is a massive issue and it’s being taken out not being put in.
Re: 3 years is a long time in rugby league.....
Come on folks. To say we have never been a top club is way off beam. Think back to the late 60s and early 70s - two Challenge Cup wins, 5 minutes away from doing the double in 1969, three successive BBC trophy wins, etc, five successive wins away to St Helens, top team in Yorkshire for several seasons, John Player Trophy winners, Classy Cas with the likes of Hardisty, Hepworth, Hartley, Reilly, Lockwood, etc, providing 5 players in the GB squad that last beat the Aussies down under. Even in recent times Cas under Powell have rarely been out of the top 5 clubs in Super League. Granted we’ve gone backwards since 2017 but Cas have arguably endured the worst crop of injuries than any other club, and since lock down have only played one match at the Jungle where we rarely lose and have had to play all but a couple of matches in Lancashire. Success comes in peaks and troughs and at the moment Cas aren’t a top team, but to say that NEVER have we been is utter rubbish.
