Rugby World Cup 2021

Post by heritage1926 » 22 Jul 2021, 07:59

https://www.nrl.com/news/2021/07/22/arl ... orkContent
The Australian Rugby League Commission (ARLC) and New Zealand Rugby League (NZRL) today informed the International Rugby League (IRL) and Rugby League World Cup (RLWC) organisers that Australia and New Zealand will not compete in a 2021 World Cup because of player welfare and safety concerns.

The ARLC and NZRL has again requested the RLWC2021 be postponed until 2022 to minimise risk of players contracting COVID-19 and ensure the best outcome for player wellbeing.

What a shambles. This was always going to happen. It was stupid for the organisers to say everyone was signed up a couple of weeks ago when it simply wasn’t true. I don’t see how it can go ahead

I wonder if the domestic season will be extended to enable fixtures to be completed and just fill the void.

It's more about the Australians not giving a flying you know what about the international game rarther than Covid
There teams at the Olympics there cricketers are about to play in Bangledesh I believe the New Zealand all blacks are coming over to play rugby union
The upshot is once again rugby league as been shown in a terrible light something of a tin pot sport I would imagine to others looking in at the game

That would be the most logical ideal.
But do the RFL do logical ideas.

It really is pathetic from the Australians once again. They could not care about the international game. The NRL are the ones to blame here. Players and coaches who have been asked said they were happy to go. Hardly down to player welfare then? Pretty soon they will put pressure on the likes of Tonga and Samoa and that will be the end of that.

Call it off and sue both Aussie and NZ RL organisations.

If ever we need proof they care not one jot about the Northern hemisphere teams or indeed, the game at all, here it is.

Wheels turn, sometimes more slowly than others, and fortunes change.

Why not field teams from players based over here?

Gutless and spineless while we've had euros, olympics, and in october ru sides touring rl sides bottle it. Two facts the number of people under 40 with no underlying illness who have died from covid is less than 0.005% ons official figures. Fact 2 was at wembley and saw people at the match in there 70's and 80's with more guts and backbone than these people , the only figure should be looking at his average age of death is 80+ toughest game in world LOL

The NRL runs the game. They don't see international rugby League as profitable and worth it.

The super League is always talking of expansion and the future but the NRL is quite happy for the game to just exist in Australia. As it's their main sport, they have no thoughts for elsewhere.

It shows the strength of the club teams that can allow them to cancel even though Australia and New Zealand are sending sportsmen and women around the globe to play other sports.

The problem is the sport at international level is toothless and they know it. Any penalty ultimately hurts our sport over here

I absolutely agree with all that.
The only issue is how much the players want it. There is a lot of National pride, not only in the Kangaroos but in Tonga, Fiji etc.
Can’t believe there won’t be a backlash but doubt it will be big enough to change things

Following up on that. Looking at today’s sports news the Players Union has already started to get vocal about it. Some very upset players over there

Interesting Mr Newton speaks how well Australia have handled the pandemic compared with the UK theve done that by lockdowns and very strict border control hoping the virus will eventually disappear I think they may be in for a long long wait and with only a small percentage of there people jabbed there looking at years of lockdowns knowing if they try and open up they will be over run by the virus very quickly

Interesting stance, my inlaws have dial nationality with Aus and have been trying to get back for over a year.
They have received permission, so they are balancing risk.

As for RLWC, without Aus and NZ, it isn't a world cup really, I hope they find a way forward.
