“We do not find that he is a racist, simply that on this occasion he used unacceptable language in the heat of the moment.”

So the RFL doesn’t find racist abuse to be the behaviour of a racist?

This brings the game into more disrepute than the incident itself.
What's all the campaign for by the RL if there going to come up with this conclusion
You could see on his face the effect the comments had had on him
Yep.
Apparently racist abuse isn’t racism on an RL field.
They are satisfied he made a racist remark but don't believe he's a racist due to his previous record
The RL lost there last bit of credibility with me today
They don’t get it, do they?
If someone makes a racist remark, they ARE a racist. Their actions and behaviour define who they are.
What next? Murderers who aren’t murderers because they haven’t killed anyone before?

John Wilkin explained it perfectly.
You cannot mix the objective and the subjective in today’s climate. Clubb did, so he’s not only racist, his grammar is questionable.
Everybody gets it.

Only the RFL could shoot themselves in the foot like this, when presented with an opportunity to paint the sport in a positive light.

I mean, they could have mitigated it. The punishment is in line with precedent.
But they needed to support that with a strong ‘no room for racism’ statement.
Instead, they made a statement that excuses racism and went as far as saying someone who racially abuses another player isn’t in fact racist.

This now sets a dangerous precedent further down the line, if anyone else 'accidentally' has a slip of the tongue whilst in the 'heat of the moment'. Just get your team mates to verify you're a good chap.

I'm putting this down to ignorance on the part of Clubb and the RFL (clutching I know!) but either way, ignorance is no excuse.

The 'ignorance' aspect is what I see in many who do not regard themselves as racist but simply cannot help acting/speaking it. Again, this is no excuse.

Can the RFL refund our £20,000 for the abuse aimed at Gareth Thomas as, I’m sure, the person who shouted it only did so “I’m the heat of the moment” and they’d never previously done so. ?

There’s a point.
Though there were more like 10/12 15yr olds that were the culprits.
Not one.

True but they weren’t seasoned professionals with contractual obligations who make a lot of money out of the game.

No. Justin Carney got the same punishment for the same offence, so the ban just follows precedent,
The issue is the statement that was made excusing racism and making the stupid claim that someone who uses racist abuse isn’t a racist,

If he’s not a racist, why is he punished for what is perceived as racism?
If I call a fellow player a “stupid ****” I may be penalised or even binned but wouldn’t get 8 games. I call someone a Polynesian stupid **** and I am punished for a racist act but I’m not a racist. I shoplifted once but I’m not a thief.
I’m confused.

The fact that the RL have been running campaigns in one form or another before the matches kick off to highlight no tolerance to racism then when a player makes a racist comment he's only given a 8 match ban because his coach and a couple of players tell the panel he's really a nice chap tells you all you need to know about the kind of people that run are game

Notts County sacked there assistant manager on the spot after he made a racist comment to a opposing player on Saturday
For all there we want to stop racism talk the RL showed there not taking the issue seriously after the Clubb incident

I don't think it's unfair to suggest that this may well be a sign of institutional racism within the RFL.

It is and the institutional pro-Wiganism makes it worse
