I thought that he was given a life ban in the NRL, and as we know (from his last stint in SL) there is an agreement that any ban imposed in the NRL also applies to SL.

Think you are correct, but where do they stand on this if he was never charged

He must have been charged cos he pleaded guilty to 3 offences. Subsequently they were not put on his record, how does that work?? Or does Australia as a country want rid of him?

God knows why charge him and not put it on his record? Something fishy going on.

Ultimately, an organisation can ban people from working within it even if they don’t commit a criminal offence. For example, doctors/teachers etc agree to abide by professional standards and if they don’t, they can be removed.
Clubs within the NRL and SL agree to follow the rules and regulations of their respective organisations, which include (I assume) not employing anyone who is banned by said organisation. There’s also a reciprocal agreement that anyone banned in the NRL is banned from playing in SL and vica versa.

Up-The-Road Tiger, I agree with you - however, how legally enforceable is the agreement if someone wanted to challenge it?
We do know how selfish clubs can he if there is an advantage in it, it can outweigh a lot of logic, misdemeanours and principles.

It would be an interesting debate.
I would expect the NRL or SL to back down to be honest. They could cite the old ‘bringing the game into disrepute’ line - all players’ contracts will contain that clause as part of the agreement member clubs have with their governing body, I expect.
Ultimately, if Barba agreed a contract at an NRL club that had a clause like that, the governing body can indeed ban him should he break it (as they have).
We’re more likely to see a challenge to the ‘no-fault stand down’ policy though I think.

I completely agree, but I am also crushingly aware if pretty much any club thought they'd be in the mix for silverware by signing him, they'd do it, justify it citing second chances and "has a right to earn a living" no matter how unpalatable.

As it seems acceptable for players in the sporting world to spread a deadly disease around with little more than a slap on the wrist ,I cannot see Ben Barba having to much of a problem playing again.

If it suits all parties concerned he'll have more lives than a cat. I don't doubt he's a good player, but what goes on behind closed doors or not is as important as the playing side imo..

Seven of Super League’s twelve clubs all have quota spots free next season. Castleford, Catalans, Leeds, Leigh, St Helens, Warrington and Wigan all currently have space to recruit overseas players.

Out of that id say only leeds or leigh could afford n need a better full back.

I would suspect that a player of that quality would find a place somewhere in all but one of those line-ups. He is a full-back, but the kind of quality that you'd accommodate anywhere in the backs.

I hope you mean Cas mdean!! Ive said previously he's a good player, but a good person is also a good thing to look for, and he doesn't fit that profile imo.

To be honest, I didn't actually, I meant Saints. Nothing would surprise me, but I think it is highly unlikely to us!

You don’t want someone with Barba’s attitude in a team fighting relegation.
I don’t think he’s as good as most people think. He was pretty poor when he joined Saints in 2017. Did well for the first half of 2018 in a team dominating the league, but his level dropped massively towards the end of that season.
He’s not played at all in 2019 or 2020.
He’s a massive gamble, on and off the field.
