New Rhinos Signing...

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.skys ... -year-deal

Not the cleanest of characters:

“In 2014, Tetevano pled guilty and was sentenced to at least nine months jail for bashing his then girlfriend on four separate occasions”

They were trying to get a 3rd marquee to be allowed and I think it was passed a couple of weeks ago.

Certainly a good player, but would be a shame for them to lose suemanafagai. Hes been class for them.

Dosnt marquee signings count only if you've spent up to the salary cap and want another good player or two
You can pay players marquee money but if all your squads under the salary cap then you've no marquee players if you know what I mean

A certain amount of a marquee counts on the cap. For example:
Player A is paid £500,000 but only £150,000 counts in the cap
I know that there are differences for “club trained players (think they count £75,000) but not 100% sure

Gale isn't a marquee player for Leeds.

He was last year so they only had to count 75k if his salary on the cap. However, clubs can name different marquee players each season to best make use if the cap.
For example, if Luke Gale is in 150k and Tetevano is on 200k, they are actually better to name Gale as the marquee player.
Whilst Gale is on a lower salary, naming his as a marquee player means that only 75k of his salary counts on the cap, leaving them with 75k to spend elsewhere.
If they name Tetevano as a marquee player, 150k of his salary counts on the cap, leaving them with 50k to spend elsewhere.
This was one of the reasons Leeds we’re so keen on Gale - a player if his quality for only a 75k salary-cap value is a very good use of the club-trained rule when it comes to marquee players.
There’s no requirement to name the two highest-earning players as the marquee players.

Will he actually get a visa? Convicted woman beater isn’t exactly the image we want is it? Back in 2014 but he still did it.

Hurrell and Merrin were their marquee players when Gale signed. He never signed as a marquee player.

Merrin then left early 2020 leaving one spot open throughout last year, which they have now filled with Tetevano. Remember we had all the months of Merrin is coming back before they finally released him too. Obviously the season issues and paycuts across the sport probably made it all rather pointless last year.

In response to the other posts, Gale wanted to go and I imagine that he would have been happy to do so for a comparable salary at Cas or slightly higher without ever becoming a marquee. I imagine finishing his career at Leeds was probably more important since he left with numerous years left on his deal.

Also, you have to pay players £175k+ so Leeds would essentially be spending a cap of £475k on 3 players in 2021 if Gale qualifies to be switched in and out like you suggest. That's a huge risk when the cap is only £2.1m

If Gale is able to, it wouldn't make sense as to why they have allocated a marquee spot to two overseas players when they could free up £100k space as you have mentioned by making Gale one. And I know Leeds fans were refuting the fact he ever was one too.

Hurrell as a marquee player you got to laugh he can't defend well enough that's why he couldn't make the starting line up of any NRL team by the time he came over here

I agree on this, opposition players that can put some footwork on him he’s goosed. I think Newman and Sutcliffe are Leeds best centres. Also Samufagai has confirmed this morning he’s left club.

But is a big name player. Ultimately, I think a lot of clubs threw cash at players to sign them and make a statement for Super League. Hurrell has the attacking potency, which is what fans like him for, and ignore the defensive cracks. What's it matter if you concede 2 as long as he scores 3?

As always, they are usually players with limited options or those coming to the end of their career with one last pay packet.

I think Sezer has probably been the best marquee signing. The rest haven't been value for money IMO.
