Ken Smith wrote: 10 Feb 2020, 10:16 Totally agree with Suffolktiger about Toronto. I doubt they’ll ever sign a Canadian player in my lifetime. I doubt that Rugby League has much appeal in Scotland though and several attempts to spread the game in Wales have never succeeded. It’s a pity some millionaire can’t be found to put money into a Midlands club such as Coventry or Leicester as then Super League might then really take off and do away with the stupid loop fixtures. Incidentally I was led to believe that Swinton were to change there name to Manchester
yet still quoted as Swinton Lions at the moment. I’m wondering if there had been some objections from Salford.
In the case of Swinton I think the Board voted it down
In terms of the Midlands I’ve spent 35 of the last 40 years living in the East and West Midlands and was in Nottingham during the Nottingham City years. Quite honestly even though there are one or two big Union clubs generally Union isn’t that popular and not many understand there are two codes.
Football is king and I don’t believe a midlands city will take off when we can’t hack it at the top level in London,Sheffield or for that matter Bradford these days. Coventry is probably the best bet but the RFL will have to do better than the shambolic Four Nations double header four or so years ago which got virtually no local coverage
It was the Board that proposed the Swinton name change. When the fans opposed it, they resigned en-masse and as such the club retained the Swinton name.

Andy Mazey then went and took over Rochdale (?) I think instead.
Thanks
Couldn’t remember if it was the Board or the fans. Makes sense.

And if teams bring in someone from outside the 21, they lose an interchange during the game.

It’s now 17 from the 21 named. The 17 have to be confirmed an hour before kick-off (though a team can replace a player who falls ill or is injured in the warm-up, but only with one of the players who was in the original 21).
If a player is not named in the 21 man squad, they can still be named in the 17 on match-day. But the team loses an interchange.

Starting to remind me of the days when you show up with only 12 or 13 but still put 17 names on the team-sheet so the opposition don't get excited that you're short handed!

Fans of a certain age will remember teams turning out with players named A N Other or S O Else.

He stood in front of the camera spoke into the microphone but!
I think Eric Cantona must be his script writer.
That aside you can't argue with success he brought at Rhino's.

Skys "love" affair with Toronto continues. According to them they are improving every game(are they), they should be exempt from relegation and they should have special dispensation for the salary cap(why?).

If the want to be in Sl they adhere to exactly the same rules and regs as the other clubs.

I don't blame Sky for focussing on the new and different. I am fairly sure viewing figures are challenged it will go in to overdrive when they're in Canada for home games.

Watching Toronto they were competitive to begin with, but better teams are always going to work things out as they go - they didn't have a lot of luck last night with injuries. I don't think Wigan had to exert themselves that much, as we didn't really to get over them. True of them and a lot of clubs their run-on 13 can get a few wins, but when you get below that, not a lot left.

Sky continue to tell all and sundry that we should be giving Toronto and chance and that they need to be given this exemption and free from relegation etc. But is that what the general paying public want to see?

There was sky pole before the game - i assume of the paying public - who were asked the question about whether or not they should receive an exemption so that they can bring in more players - 78% were not in favour - so the answer is no - the general rugby fan does not want them to be given special treatment - yet sky tell us its in the best interests of the game.

No - whats in the best interest of the game is to listen to the people who pay and watch the game want to see happening.

Any business who fails to listen to their customers, will eventually go bust - hence why the attendances at games are falling and sponsorship deals are becoming less attractive and eventually the exposure on TV fall away.

Treat all clubs equally and build from the ground up - that way the game will eventually grow.

If Toronto had done that then they may have more than 23 players

Don't know what the crowd was last night but there appeared little or no atmosphere in the ground in contrast to the Castleford v Wigan game last week
The game is all ready struggling in my opinion and to have teams in super league with little or no away following can only lead to further woes for the sport

Attendance 10333 funnily enough my good lady commented on the lack of atmosphere and crowd noise.
No sooner had she said it one of the commentary team said similar.
Not a great advert for the game
