Players after rugby
Players after rugby
With Sam Burgess having to retire and getting around 3million to do so anyone know what other ex rugby league players are doing with themselves after retiring?
I heard Chris Bridge is driving a concrete wagon for a living.

Re: Players after rugby
There is greater awareness nowadays about players preparing for life after rugby. Suicide rates for full time athletes generally is higher than for other groups, as many can’t cope with a life after being in a controlled environment from a young age, having not considered what life holds after (say) 35.
With Sam, it won’t be the money, it’ll be the time etc.
One reason many youngsters drop out of the game since it became full time, the prospects aren’t great for most. When it was part time they could stick at it.
I believe JJB is involved with organisations to help former players, and current players preparing for life after rugby.

Bernard Dwyer is/was a prison officer.
Gary Schofield was a hospital porter until some moron decided to give him a media platform to spout his crap.
I think what you'll see now though is players staying in and around the game when they retire as director of rugby, in the media, coaching or player welfare. There's also a few that have done courses/degrees to be prepared for life after the game.

Re: Players after rugby
Schoey did have a pub.
Couldn't keep the druggies out.
He even asked my advise.
The hard word and zero tolerance work if not you should have enough ex player friend's who could point out the error of their ways.
As for sports players it is and has been an issue for some time.
The riches attached to football has changed that dynamic.
Not so for most who played top flight in the 60s,70s and 80s.
Job stability is something few have.
Sports are recognising the need to prepare people for a post playing career but not everyone will either avail or have the ability to utilise what's on offer.
Or as in the case of Mr Burgess. that event happening 5 years earlier than anticipated.
It will be interesting to see how many ex players have other related health issues which may limit their post playing opportunities.
