Wigan hooker Sam Powell is unlikely to play again in 2019 after suffering a suspected fractured wrist.

The 27-year-old picked up a wrist injury in the first half of Wigan’s 18-12 win over Salford in the qualifying final play-off at the DW Stadium on Friday night.

Smithies made 72 tackles in 64 minutes last night, hes 18!!!

Whatever our opinions on wigan they certainly know how to produce quality youth players

He needs to reign his penalties in though. No good making so many tackles to save the odd metre and then conceding 40m four times a game.
I’m also a bit dubious about the statistic - that’s way more than the previous record but his team had over 50% of the possession. Doesn’t seem to make sense to me.

Hes 18 years old, sometimes the enthusiasm will overstep the mark and concede a penalty here or there, youre not gonna care if hes putting his hand up and getting stuck in so much though

I’d certainly take him, but a penalty is a penalty regardless of how old you are. You can only give so many away before you are conceding more metres than you make.

Looks like someone has made a basic error counting the stats!

The “tackles made stat” is rubbish. If you look at the end of a game, teams will have a stat of, for example, 150 play the balls yet the opposition number of tackles made will be more than double that figure. How many of the 72 was he 3rd or 4th man in?

Smithies is from Halifax and played his junior rugby in an outstanding Siddal team of that age group just another pinched by Wigan from this side of the hill!

you also have to consider that of his 62 minutes on the pitch wigan were in possession for over 50% of the time. so he made 72 tackles in 30 minutes, highly unlikely i'd say.

A full set averages one minute
72 tackles equals 12 sets
So he practically did every second tackle that he was on the pitch....
