Reorganisation of Super League

Post by Ken Smith » 15 Sep 2019, 21:52

This has been the most competitive Super League season of all time expect for the dominance of St.Helens. Any one of 4 teams could still reach the Grand Final to play the Saints who I feel with home advantage in the Semifinal should account for any of the other 4 teams, but at Old Trafford anything can happen.
To also have 4 or 5 teams in a relegation battle has been unique. There are some contentious decisions though that need addressing:-
1. If we are to haveThursday night matches, they should not involve supporters having to travel over the Pennines. Let Yorkshire clubs play Yorkshire clubs, and Lancashire clubs play Lancashire clubs on Thursday evenings.
2. The loop fixtures are a ridiculous conception, easily eradicated by having a 14 Club Super League.
3. I don’t like drawn matches going into extra time. If we have to retain them why not award 3 points for a win in all matches, but only 2 for a team winning in extra time and one point for the beaten team in extra time.
What does any one think?

1. Ideally, just abandon Thursday night games. Won’t happen though. Sky don’t care about the supporters, they will choose the best game to televise.
2. Yep. If there was a time to go to 14, this would be it. Unfortunately, most clubs won’t want to share the Sky money another two ways,
3. Just give each team one point for a draw. Extra time/golden point should be reserved for knock-out games.

Sky started wanting Thursday games to fill their schedule when the lost the champions league rights.

One interesting question is how many of the Friday night playing teams ie Leeds, get their Friday nights changed to a Thursday. With cas being a Sunday afternoon team, we tend to get a lot of them.

The answer to that seems easy to me, change our preferences to Friday games then we will not be moved around so much, Sky will not budge on Thursday games unless more football becomes available

I reckon that will happen. A good supporters bar and somewhere to go after.

Yes seems obvious.

If someone has done a list of which teams got shafted on a Thursday, I think it'll make intertwined reading. Regular season games only and home team only. If I get chance I'll try and have a go.

And if Sky don't show us, the complaint would be that we're never on TV, it's all biased towards the big clubs. Until this season, we were entertaining, which is why Sky picked us more, so it's a compliment, albeit one which is a pain in the arse for supporters. The 2 playoff games on a Thurs are purely because we finished 5th. We haven't been as good to watch this season so you never know, we might get less Thursday games now!

The games above are regular season, not including playoffs just to point out.

Another overseas team will mean more Thursday and Friday TV games for the M62 clubs.
