Re: Matautia
I don’t see what they supposedly see in him. He works hard in defence but going forward still frustrates me with his sidewards runs rather than trying to step round and through a defence.
Re: Matautia
This happens every time are players are off contract I'd be amazed if Saints even looked at himNorth Leeds Tiger wrote: ↑24 Apr 2021, 20:50 I don’t see what they supposedly see in him. He's a decent enough player but we can do a lot better at centre for next year than him depending on how strong a team the new coach is going to be allowed to have

I rate Mata’utia.North Leeds Tiger wrote: ↑24 Apr 2021, 20:50 I don’t see what they supposedly see in him. He works hard in defence but going forward still frustrates me with his sidewards runs rather than trying to step round and through a defence.
As you say, he’s good defensively. That’s important, especially on the right edge. Most teams predominantly attack that edge, so having someone there who is strong in defence is key.
I like the fact he takes carries in our own half. He’s strong and makes good metres, often on the second play after Olpherts has returned the kick. Kick returns are an important part of our game and this year its obvious that we are using the centres a lot more to to take the second carry - winger of full-back on the kick return, then Mata’utia or Shenton on the next play before we use the forwards. Those ‘sideways runs’ are designed to bring the ball centrally early in the set so we can set for the following plays - he’s doing exactly what he is supposed to do.
Finally, he has good hands when we attack the edge. The most recent example was only a few days ago - that ball out to Olpherts for his first try against Wigan was very good centre-play - he can execute the fast ‘catch and pass’ that is so important for a centre.
I’d be disappointed if he left. I don’t think we’ve seen the best of him yet as he’s not had a full season playing at right centre.
Re: Matautia
Doubt Hull are after him they already have good enough centre in Griffin and tuimavavave
St Helen's have percival and naqaima with welby coming through

Re: Matautia
Naiqama is out-of-contract at the end of this season.
Coote is also out-of-contract and Welsby is a natural full-back, so is likely to play there in the long-run.
Re: Matautia
agree, not my type of centre at all, seems to drop the anchor every time he receives the ball and starts jumping about losing any momentum the move has. Also a player that I’m always expecting to make a silly mistake, not blessed with a great deal between the ears I suspect.North Leeds Tiger wrote: ↑24 Apr 2021, 20:50 I don’t see what they supposedly see in him. Re: Matautia
What we see and what is someone's potential is different.
I watch Fergusson, Sivo in NRL and they could play for us every day other than prop, any position, any day. What does Woolf see in Pete, with the added emotional connection of playing with family..... That could move a lot.

He would make a great 13 he has the ability to offload with good hands and can break a line... Would of liked him at Cas as a 13.

Not made up.
I know he’s not the font of all knowledge.
And I take him with a pinch of salt at times.

Re: Matautia
Possibly got this one right...
Last paragraph of this article says "Warrington have already completed a deal to sign centre Peter Mata'utia, whose contract at Castleford expires at the end of this season. It is also understood the Wolves are close to landing another Tigers player, back-rower Oliver Holmes."

It's by Aaron Bower, and he's not normally too wide of the mark
