Marquee Players
For all the positives around DP's reign at Cas - and there are many - does everyone think that the policy of not signing marquee players and spreading the salary cap widely will continue.
Don't know for sure that was DP's personal policy but it seemed to be his preference over the years. It probably paid off with a number of players picked up who really thrived under his leadership - McShane, Gale, Webster etc etc - but at times it's been a bit of a scattergun approach and there were many recruits who just made up the numbers and didn't contribute much. If the core recruitment was solid and reliable, then the addition of a marquee - particularly half back! - could have, and might in future, make the difference between breaking the trophy glass ceiling?

Re: Marquee Players
What is the point of a salary cap if the richer clubs can get round it with these Marquee signings?
There should be no Marquee sinings unless the RFL funded one each per club. Whatever the cap is set at should be the limit.
Didnt Ralfy Rimmer once say "all we want is a level playing field and the cream will rise to the top"?
We are still waiting for that level playing field

Re: Marquee Players
Might be wrong but thought I read we need average crowd of over 8,000 to afford a marquee signing
The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have

Re: Marquee Players
But in 2017 didn't we have an average of over nine thousand and look at the signings we made for 2018

I asked the same question but the answer was we used the money to sign players with fees. Watts and wardle certainly.greenhouse wrote: ↑20 Sep 2021, 09:53 But in 2017 didn't we have an average of over nine thousand and look at the signings we made for 2018
Re: Marquee Players
Probably need that kind of average year-on-year to afford/justify a marquee.

Re: Marquee Players
It has to be the right player. Some marquee players haven't been worthwhile. Widdop is only this season showing his worth. Blake Austin lost it. Hurrell misses as many matches as he plays. Sezer was good in a poor team.
The problem is marquee can be anything. We can't afford a million a season on one player. So what do you get for 500k? Half as good? We aren't in either bracket to match it.
I'd love kikau from Penrith or tedesco but in reality it won't happen. The best won't come unless they are at the ends of their careers or damaged. It's probably not worth the risk.

Too subtle for me. What do the snowflakes signify?
