Captain 2021

Post by nottinghamtiger » 24 Nov 2020, 00:40

Now Michael Shenton is coming towards the end of his career, is it time to move the team captaincy on? Shenton has been fantastic for the club. As a captain, he leads the way in terms of professionalism and preparation. However, he’s never been a vocal leader on the pitch.

For me though, we have two natural leaders in McShane and Watts. McShane does 80 minutes, so I’d have him as our captain and Watts as vice-captain for 2021 and beyond.

I would only expect a change if Shenny does actually retire and if so, it has to be Macca.

Been calling for Macca (or Gale before he left) to be captain for the last few years. Not sure what Shenton is like off the field and around the training ground, but on the field, he's certainly no leader.

Macca as captain with Wattsy as vice, should be the way forward. Need a fresh approach.

Shenton is a leader, but in a different sort of way. He’s the ultimate professional, well-respected by the playing squad and by everyone else involved with the club.
A few years ago, didn’t we have a ‘club captain’ and an ‘on-field captain’? Perhaps that is the approach we need.
Club captain: Shenton.
On-field captain: McShane, with Watts as vice.
I do think Shenton has a tough job on the field being a captain who plays out wide in the centre.

Cannot argue at all about him being the ultimate professional, not many conduct themselves the way he does, never heard one bad thing about said about him from his time with us.

However, all you have to do is watch him when we concede a try. He usually just stands there quiet, whilst likes of Macca etc are barking orders. Lovely guy off the field, just not commanding enough on it. A good vocal captain can get an extra 10% out of players.

Got to agree. Gale should have as McShane should now. I reckon he pretty much calls most things anyway so officially might add that bit more to his game, if that is possible.

Nor did Jamie Lyon.
Unfortunately, Shenton is neither of these two.

I'll go with Macca and watts vice seems a good shout. Take pressure of shenny maybe get another good year out of him with no pressure on.
