The problem is that the fear of immediate retribution has gone.Tigerman2014 wrote: ↑29 Aug 2020, 21:28 Dean Sampson would have flatten him

Whilst we’ve more or less eradicated punching, the consequence of that has been the rise in grubby players like Smithies feeling comfortable enough to do things that would have resulted in a good beating in years gone by. He knows he’s not going to get battered into next week, and for me that’s not a good thing.
I read an interview with James Tamou who said that he cut out his grubby play after Mitch Garbutt flattened him. He wasn’t expecting what happened, and realised that it might happen again if he carried on.
I’m not advocating going back to the biff of the 80s and early 90s. But we’ve created a physical game where players know they can do whatever they want and the worst that can happen (but probably won’t) is a yellow card. It would be a much cleaner game in general if there was still the potential for more a immediate and painful consequence for grubbiness.
Thing is that when someone does inevitably batter Smithies, it might have the kind of effect that Willie Mason had on Stuart Fielden and make him realise he’s not the toughest bloke on the field. At the moment, he’s that kid at school who likes to act the hard-case, but tends to stay near the teachers so nobody can put him in his place.

What’s the point of playing when the results are decided before kick off by the man in the middle. I haven’t missed it half as much as I thought I would during lockdown - they don’t deserve my time nor my money.

Dont understand why somebody hasnt flattened him properly yet

Two games two blatant red cards against us what’s the point of a ref ,!!!
We need to be smarter though.
Watts knew what had happened against Saints, but just carried on playing and moaned at the ref who didn’t see it. He should have been on the ground making sure play was stopped so the video ref could look at it and make a decision.
Same with Millington. Should have held his head, kept the ball and gone onto his knees, forcing the game to stop and let the video ref have a look.
Both times we allowed the game to continue despite knowing serious foul play had occurred. Once that happens, the video ref can’t get involved.
My thoughts are smithies crimes are far worse than makensons let us see what the disaplinary think

Re: Red cards
Wigan do seem to take advantage of a weak referee and select one of their young forwards to dish it out against us, because they know we haven't anybody in the squad to serve out any retribution.
Smithies yesterday, Partington last year....what's a ban to these for Wigan? Its never the key players which could prove costly in the forthcoming games. Small price to pay for the points, and they will continue to do it unless some of ours think its time to flatten some noses and loosen some teeth.
I wouldn't begrudge any of our squad for going in to defend an injustice on the field now, the officials in general aren't fit for purpose now.
I will add the guy who took the game against Wigan early in the year didn't fall for their antics and punished them accordingly while the match was in progress!

Re: Red cards
One of the commentators said something about where he was from after that intervention implying he could be relied on to assist his local team. Anyone know?

Re: Red cards
Smithies has received a two-match ban for the headbutt, (grade C) so that should have been a red.
He’s also been referred to the tribunal for the crusher on Clare (grade D charge).
That’s three red card offences missed by the on-field referee in the last two games. It doesn’t reflect well on the officials or on the way the video referee is being used.

Re: Red cards
Like I posted earlier, the officials aren't fit for purpose.
Re: Red cards
ALSO:
Hastings - Grade A (kicking Trueman) - no penalty ban
Bullock - Grade A - (contact with Massey) - no penalty ban
So in summary FOUR offences but only one penalised (add to Makinson with no penalty given at time).
I do not think we got charged for the alleged forward pass !!!
