Re: Castleford RLFC Roll of Honour
Really interesting Ken. Thanks.
Two questions. 1. I had it in my head it was the Wills Sevens in 76
2.Thought 84 and 94 were Premiership Playoffs with the Championship going to the team who finished top?

Re: Castleford RLFC Roll of Honour
Can’t find any team of the year awards before 2009, and although Cas finished 6th in 1998 they missed the playoffs, 5th in 1999 they finished 10 points behind Bradford, and 5th again in 2000 they finished 15 points behind Wigan. They did beat both Wigan and Leeds in the playoffs in 1999 but were soundly beaten 6-36 by St Helens in the Semifinal. Also in the Challenge Cup they lost 22-32 at home to Sheffield in the quarterfinals in 1998, 27-33 to London Broncos in the Semifinals in 1999, and were knocked out by Halifax at home in the 5th Round in 2000. I can’t imagine any of those 3 years would merit the award of Team of the Year unless it was to do with work in the community, but have found no reference to such an Award around
that time, but I suppose stranger things have happened.i

Can’t find any reference about Wills Sevens in 1976, just Embassy. Perhaps that was a cigarette manufactured by Wills. Regarding 84 and 94 they were indeed known as Premiership Trophy Play offs, but I just lumped them together with other League playoffs in 39 and 69.

Thanks Ken. It was me who messaged.
Embassy may well be right. I’ve never found any record of it. I just remember watching it on Grandstand one Saturday afternoon and got it into my head it was called Wills, but it could be my memory playing tricks.

Re: Castleford RLFC Roll of Honour
Strange choice if 1999 is true as St Helens beat Bradford 8-4 in Super League Grand Final, Bradford finished League Leaders with 51 points from 30 matches, 5 points ahead of second placed St Helens, and Leeds beat London Broncos 52-16 in the Challenge Cup Final. It’s true that Cas beat both Wigan 14-10 and Leeds
23-16 both away in the playoffs, but then lost 6-36 in the Semifinal. Surely Cas shouldn’t have been voted Team of the Year on the basis of just those 2 playoff wins, magnificent as those 2 victories were.

Re: Castleford RLFC Roll of Honour
I don't think it was the official award of club of the year but something to do with the marketing department winning the award for attendance and pre match entertainment etc. Wasn't that the year jungle.com took everyone to London? We still rightly celebrated it though.

Although I haven’t been able to find any reference to the title of Team of the Year award in 1999 I’m willing to accept that you are both right in your recollections of that fact. It would appear that such titles like that and Man of Steel, etc have only been awarded since the era of Super League. Your memories are better than mine, but I seem to remember that Widnes were awarded that accolade in 2014 purely on the basis of finishing in the top 8 of the League and also reaching the Semifinals of the Challenge Cup when they were thrashed by Cas 6-28. At the time I recall many Cas fans were outraged that Widnes should be given that award instead of Cas, so I guess that whoever makes these awards likes to give them to the smaller clubs to boost their morale, etc. It’s strange though that I can’t recall Cas making such a palaver in 1999 about winning the award, but as I say your memories are probably better than mine.
If such an award were made before the advent of Super League, Cas would have deserved that title in 1969 when they won the Challenge Cup and came within 5 minutes of beating Leeds in the Championship Playoff Final, also in 1977 when they actually won 2 trophies, the Yorkshire Cup and the John Player Trophy. So as I say these awards only started with the advent of Super League.
On another track I sometimes think that Sports reporters forget that Rugby League existed before Super League, just as they do that Football existed before the advent of the Premier League.

I remember us winning Club of the Year in 1999, but I’m pretty sure this was one of the League Express ‘awards’, rather than anything official.Ken Smith wrote: ↑09 Jun 2020, 07:38 Fumper and Tamworth Tiger

The Man of Steel has been around since 1977, though. It just wasn’t won by a Castleford player until Vowles in 1999.
