Salary Cap for 2021 and beyond
Re: Salary Cap for 2021 and beyond
I think it's more about the players wanting at least a say in what happens in the sport moving forward

But if you leave it to market forces, some players could arguably commend a greater wage. Some clubs, like Leeds and Wigan, can easily steal our best assests and leave us with nothing.nottinghamtiger wrote: ↑27 May 2020, 14:15I don’t have massive sympathy in this case. There is no suggestion that players will not have their current contracts honoured. If they don’t like the salary offered when their current deal runs out, then they can choose to find alternative employment. Nobody is forcing them to accept a salary that they think is inadequate, are they?Flat Capper wrote: ↑27 May 2020, 14:09Not a fan of workers rights are you Notts?nottinghamtiger wrote: ↑27 May 2020, 13:48 Ultimately, they aren’t forced to play RL.

I disagree. Players won’t be able to command higher wages if there are fewer clubs. Those clubs will know that they hold more power and that there are essentially less jobs in the market for players, who will then have to accept lower pay or have no job. If we work on an average squad size of 25 players using the salary cap (as that is how many players count towards it), at the moment that’s 300 jobs for SL players. Take that down to an 8 team Super League and the number of jobs drops to 200, and therefore less jobs than potential employees. When you have more potential employees than vacancies, you can offer lower wages because the employees need work, but there is less of it.Flat Capper wrote: ↑27 May 2020, 15:59But if you leave it to market forces, some players could arguably commend a greater wage. Re: Salary Cap for 2021 and beyond
For a start, where's this "fewer clubs" come from?
More importantly, sport employment is not like the ordinary job market. Players are paid for their value, not for the value of te work. Again, Clubs like Wigan and Leeds wil be happy to tempt the better players who feel undervalued by their curent Club.
Can you imagine saying to Liam watts, sorry cocka, we're cutting your wage? He say alright, I'm off but no other club shows any interest?

If the salary cap has to come down because of the effects of the pandemic that's one thing can't see anybody not taking that point
If it's the Yorkshire clubs are pushing for a decrease for other reasons that's not on for me
Hull kr and Wakefield don't spend the full salary cap it's in there interest to lower the salary cap it will give them a better chance
Leeds historically don't lose there players there better players like the Lancashire clubs it's in there interest to keep the cap from increasing
Not sure where we Hull and Huddersfield stand
The long term outcome of reducing the salary cap is a duming down of all clubs to the same level of mediocrity

I think you've hit on a good point there tigerfeat - we have some clubs not spending up to the cap so a vote between clubs is unfair as those clubs could be seeking to use it as an advantage to get on a level playing field with the rest of SL.

IMO, increase the salary cap, however, no more marquee signings and quota spots go from 5 to 4. It's about time Rugby League players started earning enough to be able to build a lift after Rugby.
Re: Salary Cap for 2021 and beyond
It already is a “level playing field”. That some clubs choose to or can’t spend up to the cap should not drag the rest downderbystiger wrote: ↑28 May 2020, 11:18 I think you've hit on a good point there tigerfeat - we have some clubs not spending up to the cap so a vote between clubs is unfair as those clubs could be seeking to use it as an advantage to get on a level playing field with the rest of SL.

Exactly my point fumper, it could be used as an opportunity for those clubs to attempt to drag the rest down to their level when they should be finding ways to take themselves up to the level of everyone else. If that makes sense!Fumper27 wrote: ↑28 May 2020, 15:20It already is a “level playing field”. Re: Salary Cap for 2021 and beyond
All the clubs have voted to keep the salary cap at 2.1 million apparently ...

6 Yorkshire clubs all voted for a reduction in the salary cap. I’d like to know why the change of heart.
Re: Salary Cap for 2021 and beyond
Maybe there was a deal struck where players wages will be looked at next year think I saw something like that on A.Bowers report on the meeting this afternoon

Re: Salary Cap for 2021 and beyond
League Express saying clubs will receive there full money from sky this year if the game comes back in August
Next year clubs will be down around 150 k and they say they have heard of high profile players who are out of contract receiving greatly reduced new offers

Yes, not a good year to be an out-of-contact player!tigerfeat wrote: ↑01 Jun 2020, 10:30 League Express saying clubs will receive there full money from sky this year if the game comes back in August
