Johnny Ward
Johnny Ward
Just seen a post on Facebook that says another of the “Classy Cas” fraternity has passed away - Johnny Ward.
Johnny was a cracking ball handling forward, originally played as a hooker, but moved to No 10 to accommodate Clive Dickenson.

Fond memories of Johnny, condolences to family and friends R.I.PJohnny.
Re: Johnny Ward
I seem to remember he was the landlord of a pub somewhere in the Cas area. I also think that he played for Salford against Cas in the 1969 Challenge Cup Final, but more famously remembered for his displays for Cas in the Floodlight Trophy wins. Also a member of the touring GB side to Australia. Tough as nails and a great hooker when scrums were contested before moving to prop to make way for Clive Dickenson. Condolences to his family. RIP Wardy.

Re: Johnny Ward
Very happy memories of Johnny Ward.
Must be the best free signing we ever made.
If memories serve me right he was at Featherstone and couldn't get a game.
Very elusive with the ball and played at both hooker and prop at the highest level.
Small and always looking overweight, he had talent in bucketloads.
RIP a Cas legend.
P.s The phrase legend is much overused and therefore devalued.

Johnny was ball handler...in today’s parlance he was an “off loader” of great guile and skill. RIP Johnny, you leave fond memories!

Re: Johnny Ward
Pretty sure that’s right. I went to a do to celebrate the 40th anniversary of one of the final wins, think it was the 69 one and virtually all the squad was there including Johnny.
Great player.

Re: Johnny Ward
I stand corrected. Johnny Ward did indeed play for Cas in the 1969 Challenge Cup Final. We signed Bill Kirkbride to replace him with Mick Redfearn moving up to front row I seem to remember.
