Re: Castleford town centre
there was also the albion inn which was situated where sainsbury's car park is now. just round the corner from the george and dragon was the bridge inn which became the spangled bull (honestly lol) and by the railway bridge on bridge street was the railway hotel. loads more down the potteries and wheldon road. there was also a very large pub called the castle where the 5 towns centre is now. they own all the fields below which stretched all the way to cambridge street. this is how it got the name "castle fields" because the fields were owned by "the castle"

Just shows how many social gatherings there would have been in all those pubs and clubs. How things change and always not for the better in my opinion. Whilst on the subject of closures when I worked in the mines I used to get my bacca from Beasley's which was close to the Prince of Wales Feathers. I know it moved onto Aire street is it still there.

Re: Castleford town centre
Imo castleford and pontefract have both died since xscape opened. And many a town has suffered because of out of town shopping outlets. Nearest town to me us Chesterfield and the town is thriving. Maybe a coincidence that theres not an outlet close by.

Spot on Derby.
Re: Castleford town centre
Someone showed me a clip of some lads smashing Gregg's window on Carlton Street. I think it was on YouTube. Oh what a lovely town we've become.

Re: Castleford town centre
Have to agree, similar situation in Ashby in that there is nothing out of town particularly close. Not sure it is a "thing" in this area when you go to Burton, Coleville etc - they are still towns where people go and they're busy on a Saturday and pubs in the evening. I mean not at the moment, but you take my point.Derbyshiretiger wrote: ↑12 Feb 2020, 11:03 Imo castleford and pontefract have both died since xscape opened. Genuinely I'll be on to the DIY list off the Mrs soon..... thankfully B and Q are in chaos and there is no prospect of materials at the moment. But I am over lockdown. *Fully appreciate that is a privilege to be over it, may all of us and our loved ones stay well and safe* but you know what I mean.

Well said MD.
Re: Castleford town centre
What is it with people coughing and spitting on people while we're in this mess. I read someone did it at pound stretcher in Castleford I think it's that one near the old market entrance. Apparently he got six months jail. Too leniant in my opinion should have wrapped him up in cling film and threw him off the bridge into the river. Complete and utter discrace.
