Re: Meet the Coaches.

In the 60s and 70s I used to finish work at 5.15pm on a Friday in Middlesbrough and drive straight to Cas along the A19 which in those days wasn’t a dual carriageway. Luckily my wife’s auntie lived in Queen Street off Wheldon Road and parked my car up her ginnel, watched the match, had some supper a...

Re: Les Catalans

For those interested Cas have only won 4 times in Perpignan as follows:-
2009 24-22
2010 20-16
2016 34-28
2017 32-24
A lot depends on the time of year Cas play there as I think our first 2 wins were early in the season when the weather was less hot as it will be this Saturday.

Re: Totonto and the Salary Cap

Totally agree with Suffolktiger about Toronto. I doubt they’ll ever sign a Canadian player in my lifetime. I doubt that Rugby League has much appeal in Scotland though and several attempts to spread the game in Wales have never succeeded. It’s a pity some millionaire can’t be found to put money into...

Re: Derek Edwards.

Very sad news. An era when I started to follow Cas, a team of the late 60s and early 70s capable of beating
any team and the original classy Cas. Thanks for the memories.
RIP Derek and condolences to his family.

Re: Johnny Ward

I stand corrected. Johnny Ward did indeed play for Cas in the 1969 Challenge Cup Final. We signed Bill Kirkbride to replace him with Mick Redfearn moving up to front row I seem to remember.

Re: Johnny Ward

I seem to remember he was the landlord of a pub somewhere in the Cas area. I also think that he played for Salford against Cas in the 1969 Challenge Cup Final, but more famously remembered for his displays for Cas in the Floodlight Trophy wins. Also a member of the touring GB side to Australia. Toug...

Re: Rob Burrow

I echo all the sentiments on this forum. A little man with a big heart who reminded me of the late Roger Millward, too small to tackle effectively and had great pace. I agree that the home match with Leeds should
be dedicated to him financially. Fight on little man.

Re: History of Rugby League in Castleford

Season 1957/58 was the worst season since the inaugural season of 1926/27 as Cas finished last but one to wooden spoonists Doncaster. They accumulated only 15 points from 38 matches despite winning the first match of the season 21-8 at home to Salford. They did manage to win 29-9 at Doncaster in the...

Re: History of Rugby League in Castleford

The gloom continued at Wheldon Road for another 3 seasons as Cas finished 25th in season 1956/57 with 24 points from 38 matches. In fact Cas won only one of their first 13 matches and that was a 23-17 win against Bradford in the Yorkshire Cup. The first League win came at Liverpool 18-3. By the begi...

Re: History of Rugby League in Castleford

Season 1955/56 and Cas were in the doldrums again. Belle Vue Rangers withdrew from the League at the beginning of the season but after the fixture list had been compiled, so as 12 clubs were to play 36 matches and the remaining 18 clubs only 34 matches, the League placings were decided on a percenta...

Re: History of Rugby League in Castleford

Season 1953/54 and back to reality with Cas finishing 26th with 23 points from 36 matches. It had actually started pretty well with 6 wins in the first 8 matches, but one of those defeats was 8-58 at Workington, their biggest League defeat at the time. Cas did win 4 away matches 12-8 at Keighley, 28...

Re: History of Rugby League in Castleford

Season 1952/53 was better with 30 points from 36 matches. Again Cas were eliminated in the first round of both the Yorkshire Cup and the Challenge Cup. Although Cas lost twice to Leeds in the League they did beat Featherstone twice 13-5 at home and 11-8 away as well as Wakefield 17-14 on Christmas D...

Re: History of Rugby League in Castleford

Season 1951/52 was a disaster as Cas finished 28th out of 31 clubs wth only Keighley, Cardiff and Liverpool City finishing below them. Cas won only one away game and that was 26-5 at Cardiff. They lost 11 of their first 12 matches and that was at home to Keighley 14-11 in the Yorkshire Cup, but that...
