Despite having 14 players absent from the clash, either due to injury, suspension, or rest after the England international game, Leeds still managed to conjour up three second half tries and the win against Castleford Tigers in yesterdays local derby.
The Tigers grasped the first points on offer midway through the first half when Brent Sherwin popped one over the line with the assistance of youngster, Richard Owen.
Craig Huby then popped over a routine penalty on 28 minutes. Half time arriving and the Tigers have a drop goal attempt from Brent Sherwin, however this goes wide, going into the break the Tigers lead.
Going into the second half it was 18-year-old, Joe Westerman, who travelled to Toulouse as a non-playing member of the England squad, who put the ball over the line next, after just 6 minutes. This put Cas 10-0 up. What looked to be a good start.
Leeds, not to be beaten, then got stuck in and put three tries over the line in the space of 12 minutes, Lee Smith was the first at 58 minutes, to which Cas replied with a goal again in the form of Craig Huby, followed by Brent Webb at 66 minutes, and then Matt Diskin popped over the third on 70 minutes. Smith then went on to convert Webb´s and Diskin, narrowly missing his own, the tries and conversions put the home team ahead with the score at 16-12.
With only 3 minutes left to play, Lee Smith put a well directed penalty kick between the posts to add the final points of the evening.
Despite playing against a side that included many Acadamy players, Terry Matterson´s Castleford side still couldn´t pull out a win at Headingley Carnegie.
