If last weeks demoralising defeat lacked passion and pride, then this week's hard fought match had it in abundance. However, whilst the frustration of a hammering may be hard to take, a last minute loss is possibly much worse; particularly considering that Cas should have had the game wrapped up with just seconds left on the clock.
Whilst the effort was definately there, the luck is yet to come. For any team to dominate a game for the majority of the second period and still suffer in the manner that we did today, is mainly down to minor errors and a bounce of the ball that is yet to swing in our favour. Of course today's performance was far better than the previous outings' and the promise held by the squad back for all to see, but to collapse in that fashion is worrying to say the least.
Collectively, we played okay, however we still seem to be lacking an individual spark. Brent Sherwin had a good game, as did Michael Korkidas, Mark Leafa, Kirk Dixon and Richard Owen. Yet, we appear to be missing some killer individuals who can be the deciding factor in winning a game, when in the balance as with today.
For now, though, we simply do not have those personnel on hand, therefore must be continue plugging away each week and remaining positive - because, as was showed today, with a good display will come the victory. If the lads stick together, continue putting in the effort and stay switched on mentally for the full 80 minutes then we won't be too far away from our first win.
Whilst many will bemoan the fact that it was still a loss and it should have been a guaranteed 2 points, it was a major step up from the Huddersfield shambles. And, whilst also admitting that we should have wrapped the game up, I believe that the promise offered by this squad has again shone through and will continue to push us in the right direction.
Yes, today was gutting and yes we should have won. But, the effort was there, and as long as that is the case each week, I will accept losing a rugby game to a team who had just that little bit 'more' on a defiant and proud Cas team.
