Dumb Rugby leads to Defeat
Castleford Tigers remain bottom of the SL table today after a 28-16 loss against local rivals, Wakefield.
Ex-Tiger Danny Brough was a vital cog in the Wildcats win today in both heavy wind and snow. Terry Matterson, the Tigers head coach, critisised his team of playing "dumb rugby."
Danny, the ex-tiger, scored a try, set up another and kicked two goals to deny the Tigers of any sort of a chance. Brough, who played a vital part in Cas' promotion to SL gave no mercy against the side and battled bad weather to prove he was a big loss to the Tigers.
The first points of the match came just 4 minutes in, with Wakie's Jamie Rooney popping one over the line, a classy conversion from Danny Brough secured the further 2 points and with only 5 minutes played, the score was 6-0.
Just 11 minuted later and another Wildcats try, making Cas' wake-up and smell the coffee, a long night was ahead for the Tigers.
Luke Dorn brilliantly snatched a bouncing ball from under Matt Blaymires nose after Sherwins smart kick and then side-stepped Murphy in-goal to touch down under the posts. Wakefield then conceded a penalty close to their own goalline to gift the Tigers a full set in dangerous territory and they took full advantage as Peter Lupton pounced on another Sherwin kick.
Cas' Craig Huby then missed a conversion, which could have proved vital had Cas' not let ex-tiger Brough through early in the second half to score a "fine individual try."
Hope came when Luke Dorn added his second try of the match and youngster, Joe Westerman, added a further two points. This, however, was never a game of two halfs as Wakie made sure of the win when Atkins crossed the line and put all of Cas' chances to bed with the final try of the match. The scoring didn't stop there, when Wildcats added further points from a Rooney penalty which ended the game entirely.
Cas' head coach said, "You can't chase that. It was a dumb performance in the first half. There are no excuses, we have got 17 players out there that are good enough to do the job."
Terry Matterson seemed furious at the effort his side put in but did say, "I'm proud of the way they fought back in the second half you've got to give yourself a chance and put yourself on the front foot and we didn't do that.''
