Re: Dennis Hartley
Thanks for posting that Di. Guess what I want for Fathers' Day..?!
A true legend of both Castleford RLFC and the game as a whole.
A giant of a man who will remain as part of the history of our club. The fact that you only have to mention his christian name and anyone of thousands of people will know how you are referring to says it all.

need this one to add to my collection
Re: Dennis Hartley
I loved watching Dennis play if any of the opposition half backs were considered a threat after Dennis had steam rollerd over them a couple of times they were no longer a threat

Re: Dennis Hartley
Before my time, but a legend of the club so this will have to go into my collection too
Re: Dennis Hartley
Not only a Cas legend, but a Great Britain legend and probably the hardest man in rugby league in his day, but absolute gentleman off the field.

Re: Dennis Hartley
My coach and my best bests mentor while we were at cas. A dying breed of bloke. A lovely gentleman off the field but on the paddock upmost respect for "Big Den"
Dennis and Kevin Ward would be my bookends in my all time cas 17

Re: Dennis Hartley
I think hes finest hours despite all the success he had at cas was the two test he played in australia when we came back to win the series 2-1 he must have being knocking on then too
he was quiet man off the field but on it he was hard as nails in a time when you had to look after your half-backs or they would get smashed to bits he did it better than anybody ive seen

Re: Dennis Hartley
saw him play against the aussies in a test at headingley. they ran out of forwards willing to pack down against him both props and both 2nd rowers had a go. we were close to the pitch and you could actually here them screaming as he bent and twisted them.

Re: Dennis Hartley
My best memory of Dennis is when Leeds visited Wheldon Road with the Eyre brothers playing in the front row who were ‘big hitters’. I think their names were Albert and Kenny?
Unfortunately one of the brothers suffered a broken nose during the first scrum after packing down against Dennis. His place at open side was taken by his brother for the second scrum and spookily he suffered the same injury!!!!
Dennis was one of the hardest men I have seen play in my 60 years of watching RL

Re: Dennis Hartley
In the HKR v Cas cup tie of 1967 (I think, it was a draw and we won the replay when the crowd broke down the fence at the road end), the KR scrum half, was it Elliot, burrowed into the scrum to retrieve the ball, and flew out horizontally. He was out cold and required lengthy attention. Apparently Dennis had reminded him, "Out there's yours, in here's mine".
In a home game we scored, and Heppy kicked one of their players, who proceeded to chase Heppy down the pitch. Heppy went straight to Dennis and took refuge behind him...

Re: Dennis Hartley
Think one of the best quotes ever was from Malcolm Reilly when talking about Dennis, he said he was the only bloke on a rugby field who ever scared him, and was so glad that he was on the same side!!Mysterio wrote:Was he as good as I hear? Qualities?

So wish we had footage.

Re: Dennis Hartley
I saw Dennis make his debut for Cas and wondered what the hell we had signed, cos with the best will in the world he wasn't natural looking athlete. A couple of bullocking runs and a peach of an offload later and it was blindingly obvious. A class act who always put a shift in. Looking forward to reading the book.
