think taffy walsh got 5 in a game in the old days when there was just one division. probably around 1960Herbert Latch wrote:Derek Foster, John Joyner, Ian French, St John Ellis?, and someone else were the others. Equalled the club's record.
Can't recall Simon Middleton getting five, but I may well be wrong.

I believe Keith Howe was the first to get 5 tries in a match.lurcher wrote:think taffy walsh got 5 in a game in the old days when there was just one division. probably around 1960Herbert Latch wrote:Derek Foster, John Joyner, Ian French, St John Ellis?, and someone else were the others. Re: More milestones fall, more to come
The only one of those games I can recall attending was Ian French's. It was the first round of the Challenge Cup at Leeds United's Elland Road where Hunslet played their home matches at the time. We ran up 60 points I do believe. You would definitely have to say that Greg's was the best achievement of the lot though, given the standard of opposition.Di wrote:Derek Foster v Hunslet 10/11/1972

I play golf with Barry "Taffy" Walsh so will ask him if he ever got 5 tries in a game early 60s. I brought him down to a game this year when we thrashed St.Helens - first time he's been daaan lane for a lot of years ! He enjoyed it ! He's just away for this week on hols so will report back once I've spoken to him.

Re: More milestones fall, more to come
Steve Fenton the other one. Middleton never got 5.
Re: More milestones fall, more to come
Yes Johnny Walsh is his brother and both still play golf. Barry (Taffy) plays his golf at Pontefract Golf Club while Johnny plays at Whitwood. Barry is 78 years old and is as fit as a Butchers and still does press ups every day and plays golf really well for his age. In a Cas RL book about a couple of years ago about its history thee was a photo of him along with Sheridan and a couple of others in the bath after one of their games. I mosey down to Ponte Golf to play myself but am a member at Owston at Askern just now (been all over at Ponte, Selby and now Owston as a member). If you remember Johnny, he was up for President against Scargill for the Miners Union way back then.

Re: More milestones fall, more to come
I have spoken to Barry "Taffy" Walsh today as he is back from his holiday and he confirms he scored 5 tries against Salford "Daan Lane" but can't remember the date and unsure if it was late 50s or early sixties - there must be a record somewhere in the Cas archives ! He's 78 years old now but he'll be playing golf at 1pm today at Owston 9 hole course and I'll be playing at Ponte Golf Club with him tomorrow. He's very fit for his age. I note that Gary Stevens is also a member at Ponte Golf club and have seen him knocking around. Gary Hetherington is also a member there I believe.

Re: More milestones fall, more to come
Can anyone remember a Wigan winger in the 70s named Green Vigo from S.Africa - he scored 7 tries ! If anyone can remember, can you also remember a 15 minute documentary that Colin Welland did on grass roots rugby league that was shown by the BBC just before the CC Final I think in 77/78. It was showing amateur game up to professional and featured Green Vigo and a couple of his tries in this short documentary.
The reason I ask is that I was in this documentary as I was in my amateur days playing for my company team "Cameron Ironworks" in the Leeds league (note Welland showed a clips from a game we played against East Leeds and referenced us as Cameron Steelworks in his documentary) - I'd love to get my hands on it from the BBC if they still have it. If anyone knows how to go about requesting it from the BBC I'd appreciate some advice. Note if you remember George Claughton who played at Cas at around this time he also sneakily played for us in the Sunday League as he worked at Cameron (he brought Gary Stevens over to a couple of our training sessions - couldn't keep up with him on speed or acceleration...ha ha !!).
