age concern ?

Post by Max n paddy » 12 Apr 2014, 09:46

Still reeling from the defeat and don't want to comment on too much detail until I've watched it on tv.

But , I have a slight concern we have too many players at the wrong end of there rugby league journey's and showed up last night against top opposition.

Any thoughts or have we got the blend right ?

Thought lynch did well , dorn seemed to struggle a bit , Finn was over run at times. And Webster was picked out and slow.

Webster's injuries have taken there toll on him I fear.
We can't afford two veteran centres IMO

Fantastic effort though !

Disagree some what, for mine Andy Lynch was the best player on the park for much of last night, he's playing like he's 20 yrs of age again, other than Lynchy Webster and Dorn, weren't all the other 14 players last night 28 or under???

Agree about lynch , been defying his age.

It's a long season though.

If we had a team that consisted of players all under 30 and we had lost we would probably be sat here saying we needed experience to close the game out. Last night had nothing to do with running our of steam per-say, we simply handed over the momentum by making unforced errors in and around our own half of the field and momentum always leads to points (look at us in the 1st half) Ultimately we rarely got to a kick, for the last 15 mins it should have been an early kick down field and make them go the length. I have full confidence we will learn from this though. The season is a long journey, if you learn along the way, nights like last night will stand us in good stead come the back end of the season and in pressure challenge cup games.

It's been mentioned on another thread that we needed a cool head and a more vocal captain to steady the ship.

Weller made three big boo boos in front of the main stand that contributed to our down fall and you wouldn't put him in our mature group.

Agree with most of what's been said but i do worry about Dorn , lynch , and even more about Webster in a long season ahead.

All three I fear may end up sat with Gilmore !

Don't get me wrong even with the experience let's say in our side we still should have won last night.

All will unfold as we go along ! Wakey next week , a must win in my eyes. Bounce back quick !

That is very true, its often not about losing a game but how you react. A definite must win.

There wasn't a concern about age in the games we've won!!

Every team gets beat its how you respond that counts. I guess we find out in the next few weeks

Agree, but I did fear like I said before about our senior players would hold up as the season went on.

Hopefully we can keep them all fit. But IMO Webster is finished now more or less. Game time or not.

Let's see how we hold up going forward. Fingers crossed.

I think the fact Webster hasn't played a full game for over 12 months played a big part in his poor defensive effort and I wouldn't write him off just yet. I thought Lynch had a huge game and Dorn went well.
Finn was very disapointing though , especially in the second half when we needed him to take control . Hopefully we will learn from this anmd soon we may see the return of young Lee Gilmour to give our side a more youthful look.

Ryan Boyle is about 25.

Nothing to do with the age.

We had to defend multiple sets at back end of first half and didn't have much possession in the second. When we did we made costly errors and turned the ball over.

Had we come out in the second half and controlled the ball and played the sets we'd have conserved more energy to defend with later on in the game.

Exactly !! Lol ! Most senior players do run out of steam before the younger guys !!

I was sat right behind the dug out. I could see who was blowing and who wasn't.

And , it was just a light hearted thread about the concern of our senior players !!! ](*,)

I don't think we blew out if steam at all.

Our final play options were dreadful. On 2 occasions. Once Finn went into dummy half on the last and threw a loose ball. Next he allows Saints to get to him resulting in a 5yrd shoddy kick which Josh Jones started a 50yrd kick return.

Nothing to do with Age. Just a lack of composure

On that 2nd one he should've just taken the tackle and had them playing the ball 10 meters off their line.
