With the backs I think age is irrelevant, but coaches are probably more weary about putting young props straight in as their bodies just aren't ready.

How would anyone know when a teenager is good enough if he isnt given a shot? Pre season friendlies arent the way to find out. They may look outstanding in training but does that mean they are ready? I think not.

Full intensity is the only way they will improve and gain experience to play SL. If we are decimated by injuries then young players are used due to necessity and often when the team isnt winning or playing well. Not the brst environment.

We have just had our best season ever and that would be easier to give the young players a chance as they are surrounded by better players in a winning team. A better environment. :D :D

I don't have an issue with giving young players a shot, but, excluding young Turner taking his shot and proving to be physically and mentally ready to play a key position for the duration of the season to a high standard (which I think is unlikely) are full back options are pretty poor. Big worry for me.

How do you know he’s better than Eden or Roberts.
I’ve watched shenny all his career at cas and never once have I seen him play at full back.
So tbh it would be a gamble.

I'd go a long with this.a full back does more running, more talking and more decision making than any other player on the pitch.some of this skill cannot be taught they are attributes that a player is born with. The best players to mould into a full back is a half back has that's the closest role to it attacking wise any way. Michael Shenton has none of the above skills to even consider in this role. It's either Roberts or Eden or both over the season.

Definitely switched to fb once or twice during a game because of an injury

Shenny played full back at Widnes away in 2013. Cas won a high scoring game like 44 40.

Here's a thought.

Given that Grand Final winning teams tend to start slowly and then build up to peak by the time the playoffs roll around, and given that we now have the top-of-the-league monkey off our back, but looked worse-than-average in the final...

Should Cas look at running out younger players in the opening few rounds of next year both to keep our best players fresh and ensure that our youth backups get game time? This may mean a few early season losses, and obviously it'd have to be carefully managed so we don't fall out of the hunt for the top 4, but is it something to consider?

It may all be a moot point as Cas will have a huge target on them next year, and may have to fight just to keep ourselves in the top end of the table.

Agree with some of this that we need to play the long game but we cannot get into the habit of losing like Leeds 2016 Warrington 2017 and get in a hole we cannot get out of,again you just don't know what will turn up player wise come the middle of the year.maybe a top player full back or any other position may become available and whilst saving a bit back on the cap would put us in a good position to boost the squad at the right time.

I thought the Shenton at fullback would raise a reaction.
The way I see it, is it brings Wardle in the team in his best position, It keeps Eden and Roberts in their best positions. Shenton has all winter to learn the roll. As club captain, he's obviously a great communicator, he's quick and dangerous in open play, he can tackle, he's tall and relatively safe under a high ball. I think it's a better option than any other with the current squad. It also gets the best 13 on the pitch together.

Who ever we pick is going to have all winter there so should be able to hit the lines very well and create chances if they have fast feet and fast hand we should be ok.

I'm of the opinion you don't move your best players from their best positions for the sake of it. I also don't believe Shenton is vocally strong enough to play full-back. He's a very quiet captain. You need someone who isn't afraid to shout at players and give them a good verbal bashing if they aren't in the right place. Add to that, he doesn't have the pace he used to do then I think he's past the age to start messing about.

At least Roberts has played at full-back considerably more and has the passing ability, footwork and creativity to play there. Not only that but he's an awesome defensive player too. Anyway, it seems like Roberts is playing full-back according to League Express this morning.

Roberts
Minikin
Webster
Shenton
Eden
Ellis
Gale
Millington
McShane
Massey
JSL
McMeeken
Milner

Cook
Moors
Holmes
Wardle

Squad players: Clark, Lo, Foster, Hitchcox, Springer, Maher, Gill, Douglas, Egodo, Trueman.

I thought Callum Turner being our currant international under 19 full back would have at least got into the squad , we are crying out for a full back but it looks like most of the fans are prepared to shuffle any of our first team players to the specialist position of full back
